Different denominators: rename first

1/3 + 1/6 — thirds and sixths are different names. But 6 is a multiple of 3, so we only need to rename ONE fraction.

thirds 1/3 sixths 1/6 1/6 1/6 1/3 sits exactly on top of two sixths → 1/3 = 2/6 2/6 + 1/6 = 3/6 = 1/2
The fraction wall proves the renaming — then the addition is just counting sixths.
