ScienceA full-year Year 4 Science unit built on the Western Australian Curriculum (SCSA), organised around the four science understanding strands and the science inquiry skills that run through all of them. Across the year students: represent the feeding relationships between producers, consumers and decomposers using food chains and food webs (Biological sciences); investigate how processed materials such as fibres, metals, glass and plastics are made from raw materials and how their physical properties influence their use (Chemical sciences); explore how weathering, erosion, transportation and deposition cause slow or rapid change to Earth's surface (Earth and space sciences); and observe and investigate forces exerted through direct contact, such as friction, and from a distance, such as magnetism and gravity (Physical sciences). Woven through every strand, students work scientifically: posing questions involving a changed variable, making predictions from observations and science knowledge, planning investigations that include elements of fair tests and consideration of material and equipment risks, making and recording observations using formal measurements and familiar scaled instruments, organising and representing data using tables and column graphs to identify patterns, comparing findings with others and with predictions, communicating ideas using scientific vocabulary, and using science knowledge to propose explanations and solutions and to identify questions for further investigation. The unit deliberately weaves in the General Capabilities and Cross-curriculum Priorities. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures are engaged authentically (for example, First Peoples' knowledge of Country and connection to landscape when studying change to Earth's surface). Ethical Understanding is developed through discussions of mining, waste, sustainability and the care of living things; Intercultural Understanding through diverse perspectives on environments and resources; Critical and Creative Thinking through the inquiry cycle; Literacy through informative and persuasive science texts; Numeracy through measurement, tables and column graphs; Digital Literacy through data collection and safe use of digital tools; and Personal and Social capability through collaborative investigation. Content is planned for a diverse classroom, with ABLEWA-informed adjustments for students with additional learning needs. Teaching follows accepted primary-science methodology: guided inquiry and fair testing, a recurring fair-test investigation template, hands-on and fieldwork experiences, use of the Primary Connections approach, and diagnostic, formative and summative assessment woven through the learning sequence. Time allocation reflects SCSA advice for primary Science.
