Fraction Strips: Colour, Cut & Match (Hands-on)

A colour-and-cut fraction activity for Lesson 9 (equivalent fractions). Students colour fraction strips (whole, halves, thirds, quarters, sixths), cut them out, and lay them side by side to discover equivalents. Includes teacher notes and matching tasks. Printable.

Mae the cat waving.

"Let's make fraction strips and see which ones match!" says Mae. Colour each strip, cut along the lines, then lay them on top of each other to find equal shares.

Colour and cut these strips

All the strips are the same length — that's important! Colour each one, then cut along the solid lines inside it.

1 whole 1/2 1/2 1/3 1/3 1/3 1/4 1/4 1/4 1/4 1/6 1/6 1/6 1/6 1/6 1/6 All strips are the same length — that's the secret!

Now match them

1. Place your two 1/4 pieces end to end. Which single piece are they the same length as?

2. How many 1/6 pieces fit along one 1/2 piece?   So 1/2 = □/6

3. Find two 1/6 pieces. What single piece do they match? So 2/6 = 1/□

4. Write three equal pairs you discovered by matching pieces.
