Build the reasoning through spoken cause-and-effect talk and shared discussion of human impact.
"And then what?" chains
Pose a changing condition aloud ("a long drought comes") and run a spoken consequence chain — each student adds one link beginning "and then…", with the class deciding together where the chain ends for a living thing's survival.
Talk the plan before planting
Before any group touches the seeds, they must say their fair-test plan to you in the frame: "We will change ___, keep ___ the same, and measure ___ each day." Approving the spoken plan first catches unfair set-ups early.
Daily verbal check-in
Each day of the investigation, groups report their measurement aloud in one sentence: "Today pot A is ___ mm and pot B is ___ mm, a difference of ___." Saying the comparison reinforces the pattern.
