Visual: icons and concept maps

Make the link between an animal and its needs visible through icons, colour and a clear concept map.

Four-icon needs key

Give each survival need a simple icon students draw all lesson: a leaf (food), a droplet (water), a roof (shelter), arrows (space). On any animal picture, students annotate it by placing the four icons where that need is met in its habitat.

Concept-map the habitat

Build a simple radial map: the animal in the centre, four arms out to the four needs, and at the end of each arm what supplies it. To show change, students cross out one arm in red and draw what happens next — making the cause-and-effect chain visible.
