Lead with talk, sound and spoken patterns so the vocabulary lands through the ear before it's written.
A call-and-response chant
Teach a three-beat chant for the variable jobs: teacher calls "One thing I…" and the class responds "CHANGE!"; "What I…" → "MEASURE!"; "Everything else I…" → "KEEP THE SAME!". Use it as a quick re-activation cue throughout the term.
Think-pair-share the scenarios
Run the paper-towel and plant scenarios entirely as structured talk. Each pair must say a full sentence in the frame: "We will change ___, measure ___, and keep ___ the same." Insist on the spoken sentence before anyone writes. For the flawed plant plan, students explain aloud to a partner why it isn't fair.
Exit ticket as a spoken pair check
Instead of writing the sugar-dissolving exit ticket, pairs whisper their "change" and "keep the same" to each other and you spot-check three pairs aloud.
