Rename, then add

For related denominators, line fractions up on the wall: 1/2 = 2/4, so 1/2 + 1/4 = 3/4.

Estimate first

Round before you calculate so you can judge the answer. 297 + 412 ≈ 300 + 400 = 700.

This is a broad component — plan as a 3–4 session sequence: whole numbers → fractions → decimals → percentages & estimation.
