This lesson delivers the strand's summative assessment, the Egg-Drop Design Challenge. Set the challenge: design a container that protects a raw egg when dropped. Using the deck, briefly explain that gravity pulls the egg down and the landing creates a force — the design must slow and cushion the egg.
Model the expectations, not a solution: think aloud about matching materials to properties ("bubble wrap is soft and cushioning; tape is strong to hold it together") and remind students they must justify each material by its property, label their design, and reflect after testing.
Light-touch only (this is assessment): confirm the materials bank, safety rules for building and dropping, and that each student completes their own written responses even if building in a group. Clarify the drop procedure and where testing happens.
Students complete the Egg-Drop Design Challenge: Part A (choose materials, justify by property), Part B (labelled design), Part C (safety risk), build, then test by dropping, and Part D (evaluate which property worked and propose an improvement). Consolidate with a short class discussion of which properties protected the eggs best.
