This lesson delivers the strand's summative assessment, Balanced and Unbalanced Forces. Review the big ideas with the slide deck: forces are pushes and pulls shown with arrows; contact forces (friction) need touching while forces at a distance (magnetism, gravity) do not; balanced forces are equal and opposite (no movement); unbalanced forces change movement.
Model the expectations with a neutral example (e.g. a hanging sign): draw labelled arrows, decide balanced/unbalanced from whether it moves, and name the force type. Do not model the assessment situations themselves.
Light-touch only (this is assessment): re-run a quick even/uneven tug-of-war to re-anchor the balanced/unbalanced idea, confirm the arrow convention (direction + size), and check students know to work individually. Clarify where to find support (word wall).
Students complete the Balanced and Unbalanced Forces task individually: analysing five situations (book on a table, ball on grass, two magnets, tug-of-war, and a sorting task) by drawing labelled force arrows, deciding balanced/unbalanced with justification, and classifying forces as contact or at a distance. Consolidate with a brief class review of the answers.
