For learners who benefit from movement and physical materials, run the place-value lesson as a hands-on "bundling" activity rather than board work.
Set up
Provide real countable objects (gumnuts, pop-sticks, counters, or bundling straws) and elastic bands. Mark five hoops or trays on the floor labelled ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten-thousands.
Do
- Children physically bundle ten ones with a band and "trade up" to the tens tray, ten tens into a hundred, and so on — feeling the ten-times relationship.
- Call out a number ("three thousand, two hundred and forty") and have groups race to place the right bundles in the right trays, then write the numeral on a card.
- Reverse it: place bundles, and children read the number aloud and write it.
This makes the place-holder zero concrete: an empty tray must still be counted when reading the number left to right.
