Divided Germany and the Berlin Wall
The division of Germany and Berlin as the focal point of the Cold War. The post-war occupation zones; the creation of the Federal Republic (West Germany) and the German Democratic Republic (East Germany); the political and economic contrast between the two states; and the building of the Berlin Wall in 1961, its purpose in stemming the flow of refugees, and its significance as the symbol of a divided continent.
