Seizing power in October was the easy part. Holding it meant winning a brutal civil war, and the methods the Bolsheviks used to win — terror, centralisation and total economic control — shaped the Soviet state for decades.
First moves and Brest-Litovsk
The Bolsheviks moved fast: decrees on Land and Peace, workers' control of factories, and the dissolution of the elected Constituent Assembly in January 1918 when they lost the vote — a clear signal that they would not share power. To exit the war, they signed the punitive Treaty of Brest-Litovsk (March 1918), surrendering vast territory. It bought survival but enraged opponents.
The sides
The Reds (Bolsheviks) faced the Whites — a fragmented coalition of monarchists, liberals and former generals — plus the Right Socialist Revolutionaries, nationalist movements, and Allied Intervention by foreign powers. The Whites' fatal flaw was disunity: they shared only opposition to the Reds, never a common goal.
How the Reds won
- Trotsky and the Red Army — he built a disciplined force of five million, using former Tsarist officers under political supervision.
- Central position — the Reds held the industrial core, railways and the major cities, while the Whites were scattered on the periphery.
- The Red Terror — the Cheka, under Dzerzhinsky, used arrests, executions and intimidation to crush opposition behind the lines.
- War Communism — total economic mobilisation: nationalisation of industry, forced requisitioning of grain, and rationing. It fed the army but devastated the peasantry.
Victory's price and the turn to NEP
By 1921 the Reds had won, but War Communism had triggered famine and revolt — the Tambov peasant risings and, decisively, the Kronstadt Uprising of sailors who had once been the regime's strongest supporters. At the 10th Party Congress (March 1921), Lenin responded with two moves: the Ban on Factions (tightening party discipline) and the New Economic Policy (a tactical retreat that allowed limited private trade). In 1922 the USSR was formally created.
Let's weigh the reasons for the Red victory and decide how to rank them.
| Factor | Reds | Whites |
|---|---|---|
| Leadership & organisation | Unified under Lenin/Trotsky | Divided, no single command |
| Geography | Central: cities, industry, rail | Scattered on the periphery |
| Aims | Clear: defend the revolution | Only united by anti-Bolshevism |
| Methods | Terror + War Communism mobilised resources | Alienated peasants; tainted by foreign backing |
As a class, rank these four factors from most to least important and justify the top choice. Then discuss: did the Reds win, or did the Whites lose?
Q1. Define War Communism and the Red Terror in one sentence each.
Q2. Explain why the Bolsheviks introduced the New Economic Policy in 1921.
Q3. Analyse the most important reason for the Bolshevik victory in the Civil War. Justify your choice against at least one alternative factor.
