Task 5 – Explanation: Ideology vs Security in Post-War Europe

Task

Explanation (Task 5). An in-class explanation essay (5 minutes planning, 50 minutes working). Sample proposition: "Ideology was more important than Stalin's desire for security in shaping Europe after World War II." Marked on introduction/proposition, historical narrative, and sustained argument. Official SCSA weighting: 10% of the school mark for the Unit 3–4 pair (Explanation type weighting 20%).

Rubric criteria (weights as a percentage of this assessment)

Historical narrative 30% Demonstrates understanding of the major features of the historical narrative and evaluates the impact of forces — people, events, ideas and structures — on continuity and change.
Introduction and proposition 20% Provides an introduction that develops a clear proposition, demonstrating understanding of the focus and key terms of the question, and proposes a logical, coherent structure.
