Materials fall into two groups when it comes to electricity.

There are two ways to wire up two globes — and they behave very differently when one globe fails. Watch what happens when we remove a globe from each.

In series, the globes share one loop — break it and both go dark. In parallel, each globe has its own branch, so the others keep working.
