Lesson 10 — Fair Test: Freeze–Thaw Weathering 1 / 4

Today we become scientists and investigate freeze–thaw — how water breaks solid rock. 🧊🪨

Step 1: Here's the science. Water gets into a crack, freezes and expands, pushing the crack wider.

1. water in crack 2. freezes, expands 3. rock splits

Step 2: Our sealed container of water is a pretend "rock". We will put it in the freezer.

To keep it a fair test:

Change: the temperature (freeze it). Measure: how the container changes. Keep the same: container size, amount of water, time in freezer.

Your turn, scientists! 🔬

  1. Write your question and prediction.
  2. Fill your container, seal it and put it in the freezer.
  3. Next time, observe what happened and compare it to your prediction.
  4. Use the Fair Test Investigation Template.
